Minecraft for Petit Computer! I have spent about eight months in total so far on the project, and am currently in the Beta stage of creation. This was originally called Raycraft, but I changed the name to Minecraft DS after Alpha 1.5. I got the raycaster and raytracer engines from Calc84maniac, but I am working toward making this a Minecraft clone in PTC.
Project is over. Petit Computer is just not capable of running the complexity of this program in an enjoyable manner. Unfortunate, I know. So, no more updates. Maybe when PTC3D comes out will we (the Minecraft DS team) redo this project with the new, faster interpreter.
"Why is this program so laggy?" you may ask. There are two main reasons. The first reason is that Petit Computer doesn't support 3D graphics, so the program resorted to a Raycaster: an engine that gives the illusion of 3D graphics using a 2D drawing plane. This is much less efficient and much slower for the interpreter to handle. The second reason is that Petit Computer is indeed an INTERPRETER, as opposed to a COMPILER. The difference? A compiler (which the real Minecraft uses) breaks down the code into computer language (binary or executable), and the binary/executable is what's run. This means that the code is run very efficiently and fast. An interpreter (what Minecraft DS uses) reads a line, and executes it. Reads another line, then executes it. The result is a program that runs a lot slower but is easier to code in because a lot of stuff is done automatically. This is why it's so laggy and slow.
So, yes. Project is finished. We (the team of MCDS) apologize greatly, but it has simply become a pain to work on because the game just isn't as enjoyable as we'd hoped it would have been. We hope you understand, and thank you for all of the support we've gotten over the duration of coding this project.
